ICYMI- The April (Mentoring) 2017 Meeting

Our April 20, 2017 meeting focused on Mentoring. We have tried to highlight Mentoring programs in our MCPS schools (April 2016) and this year in our Community. Presentations were shared from The Game Changers Conference which was held on April 29, 2017 and My Brother’s Keeper, which is working with the Montgomery County community.

Below is a recap from our Mentoring meeting held in April 2016. Mentoring Matters!

MCPS School Based Mentoring Programs-Middle, High Schools- March 2016

MCPS SchoolBased Mentoring Programs-Elementary School -March 2016

The April 14, 2016 meeting focused on mentoring programs in MCPS schools. The meeting began with two special guest speakers that set the tone for this purposeful gathering. Dr. Laverne Kimball, MCPS Associate Superintendent of Elementary Schools, and Mr. Michael Williams, Co-County Coordinator, Minority Scholars Program, MCPS started the conversation by sharing information related to their experience as mentors.

Dr. Kimball shared that several Directors in her office are mentoring MCPS students and have groups of about 8 students. Discussions related to activities are shared often at their meetings.

Mr. Williams shares that MSP is in 15 high schools  and student leaders meet once a month. The purpose of MSP is to tackle the achievement gap and build student leadership. Main goals of MSP include tutoring, college visits, community outreach, and also has a “Speaker Series”  component. Thanks so much to our Guest Speakers, Dr. Kimball and Mr. Michael Williams.

The Discussion panel was another highlight of this meeting. Mentoring group sponsors shared best practices of mentoring. Special thanks to all of them!
